Sixth edition

Amsterdam Art Weekend

From 23 to 26 November, the city of Amsterdam dedicates four whole days in celebration of contemporary art for the sixth time during the Amsterdam Art Weekend. The only contemporary arts festival of its kind in the city brings together the cultural sector in a unique way.

A tantalising program gives visitors the opportunity to discover the latest in Amsterdam’s contemporary art scene. Popular highlights of this year’s programme include the Gallery Night and the RijksakademieOPEN. The Oude Kerk, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, The Black Archives and Framer Framed present their new exhibitions. De Balie, EYE, ISO and De Ateliers also hold additional events. Amsterdam Art Weekend includes over 100 exhibitions and events this year.

Festivities

For four days, the Amsterdam Art Weekend leads its visitors throughout the city. A festive opening of the weekend takes place on Friday 24 November: in addition to the Gallery Night the program also lists an animated event in the EYE Filmmuseum. On the occasion of the Gallery Night, 6 cutting-edge galleries present their latest exhibitions from 5 to 9pm and most of them do so in the presence of the artists themselves. The EYE Filmmuseum hosts several DJs, as well as a live performance by the Lebanese artist Rabih Mroué (1967). Simultaneously, a large installation created by the internet artist Rafaël Rozendaal (1980) is on display in the museum. Galleries

In addition to the Gallery night, several galleries organise free events that are accessible for everyone during AmsterdamArt Weekend. You can visit a performance of electronic music by emerging sound artist Kayleigh Beard at Upstream Gallery, or step into the Steven Aalders painter studio for a piano concert by John Snijders, organised by Slewe. Or you can join in the conversation about commercialisation of the contemporary arts world at Albada Jelgersma.

Talent development and Broadening Horizons

Amsterdam Art Weekend also pays attention to talent development and broadening horizons. Visitors can discover a new generation of international artists who, like in previous editions at the RijksakademieOPEN, open their studio doors to visitors. You can broaden your horizons at the Humans of the Institution, a new part of the program which comprises a twoday conference that focuses on the role of freelancers in the cultural sector and changing organizational structures. Or you could visit the Oude Kerk where the famous curator Hans Ulrich Obrist interviews Christian Boltanski. You can also join the debate on Aesthetic Activism – The role of exhibitions in politics hosted by De Balie and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Kunstvereine coming to Amsterdam

A new addition to the Amsterdam Art Weekend program is an exchange project in collaboration with K_nstv___. Six German Kunstvereine organize sessions at Amsterdam galleries and project spaces that call attention to artistic talent and experimentation. Gallery Lumen Travo welcomes German artist Carsten Table with a live performance. The Goethe Institute hosts a seminar that hones in on the German Kunstvereine culture. The latter marks the start of the international part of the Art Weekend, which is continued next year with participants from France. With this new program element the Art Weekend offers profit and non-profit institutions an international platform for contemporary exchanges.

Amsterdam Art

Amsterdam Art functions as a catalyst and compass for contemporary art. Throughout the year the Foundation works with important national and international arts and cultural institutions. In doing so, it aims to bring together and highlight Amsterdam’s unique character as a creative and cultural city. The scope and expertise of Amsterdam Art makes her the appropriate party to generate continuous public interest for the metropolitan offer of contemporary art. Amsterdam Art is the initiator and coordinator of Amsterdam Art Weekend, the only contemporary art weekend of the city of its kind which hosts over 46,000 visitors annually.
