FRIEZE WEEK PROGRAMME FEATURED 128 GALLERIES, MUSEUMS AND PARTNERS, INCLUDING LIVE, FRIEZE TALKS, FRIEZE SCULPTURE AND FRIEZE ARTIST AWARD
LIVE:
Founded by Victor Wang(王宗孚) (Artistic Director and Chief Curator of M WOODS Museum, Beijing), The Institute of Melodic Healing (IMH) is an ‘institute of sound and performance’, that took place at London’s 9 Cork St and lasted 111 hours. As part of Frieze Week, Wang has established the IMH, in order to ‘rethink the parameters of live art during a time when distance, the body, and movement are regulated in COVID-19 Britain.’
The temporary institute brought together eight UK-based artists that experimented and worked together, through a series of installations and events over six days.
●Alvaro Barrington(Emalin) partnered with musicians, comedians and performance artists to produce a series of live acts that was broadcasted from the IMH via @friezeartfair. The performances establish a conversation between London, where Barrington is based, and his hometown New York, and continue the artist’s ongoing commitment to interconnectedness, collaboration and unity.
●Cécile B. Evans(Chateau Shatto and Emanuel Layr) presented two live-streamed “dress rehearsals” for their new performance Notations for an Adaptation of Giselle (welcome to whatever forever). The format of rehearsals plays an important role at the IMH, as a way to reverse the processes of making and presenting live art
●Mandy El-Sayegh(Lehmann Maupin) debuted a new site-specific floor installation that acts like a second skin of language and light, and offers a contact space for performances to occupy.
●Denzil Forrester(Stephen Friedman Gallery): drawing on the important role that dance and music have played in the transformation of the visual arts, the IMH presented key works by Forrester including Youth of the Day (1989), which vibrantly depicts the dancing bodies that populated East London’s reggae and dub nightclubs during the 1980s
●Anthea Hamilton(Thomas Dane Gallery) created an immersive installation at 9 Cork Street consisting of a digitally printed wallpaper and commercially made black mannequins. They physically engage with the other live works through figurative language. In addition, a fragrance floats, albeit briefly, in the space
●Haroon Mirza(Lisson Gallery): presented a new participatory light and sound installation MindFlip, in collaboration with soprano opera singer Sarah-Jane Lewis. Audiences were able to use a QR code to activate the work at 9 Cork Street
●Zadie Xa and Benito Mayor Vallejo(Agustina Ferreyra): worked collaboratively with dancer and performer Jia-Yu Cortiand make-up artist Ophelia Liu, Xa and Mayor Vallejo rehearsing a new experimental performance that directly responds to works by Anthea Hamilton, Mandy El-Sayegh, and Haroon Mirza
In addition to the programme of live installation and performance, the IMH hosted a conversation between Denzil Forrester and Victor Wangon on Thursday 8 October at 9 Cork Street and was streamed live on IGTV and on Frieze.com
