MASTER DRAWINGS NEW YORK 2022

Master Drawings New York (MDNY) from Friday, January 21 through Saturday, January 29, 2022. 21 world’s leading international art dealers will exhibit an outstanding array of drawings, paintings, watercolors, and sculptures from the 14th to the 21st centuries.

Now in its 16th year, the annual week-long event presents gallery exhibitions primarily along Madison Avenue on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It includes pop-up exhibitions by leading dealers from Europe, and special presentations mounted in private gallery spaces by top New York specialists.

 

Notably, four new exhibitors join the eminent roster. These include Gray M.C.A. Gallery (Bath, UK), Agnews (London), Sam Fogg (London), and Nicholas Hall (New York).

“In 2021, Master Drawings New York we were able to host the event on our robust digital platform, and several dealers mounted exceptional in-person exhibitions. We are building on the lessons learned and changes made last year as we build our much anticipated schedule of partnership events and gallery exhibitions this coming year.

Highlights Include:

 – The Met Curatorial Lecture Event on Drawing in Radical Times: Artists in the Orbit of Jacques Louis David

Dates: Friday, January 21, 11 am

Location: Sacerdote Lecture Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

 

Shaping the public’s perceptions of historical events in the years before, during, and after the French Revolution, Jacques Louis David was regarded as the most important painter in France in his time. The Met is presenting a curatorial conversation and viewing of their upcoming first-of-its-kind exhibition devoted to the works on paper celebrating this influential artist and his impact on artists in his orbit.

 – Mexican Muralism and its American Impact

Dates: Friday, January 28, 10 am

Location: Hispanic Society Museum & Library at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 633 West 155th Street

 

The West Harlem Art Fund director Savona Bailey-McClain, will be moderating a panel discussion on Mexican Muralism and its American Impact.

In partnership with the West Harlem Art Fund and Hispanic Society Museum & Library.

 

 – 400 Years of Drawings from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library

Dates: Monday, January 24 – Sunday, January 30

Location: Hispanic Society Museum & Library at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 633 West 155th Street

 

In addition to the panel discussion, a small exhibition of drawings from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library will be on view at the American Academy of Arts and Letters for the duration of Master Drawings week.

 

Friday, January 21 – Thursday, January 27 viewing can be made by appointment. On
Friday, January 28 – Sunday, January 30 from 1-5pm the drawings will be on view to the public without an appointment.


The Hispanic Society of America was founded in 1904 to establish a free, public museum and reference library to study the art and culture of Spain, Portugal, Latin America, and the Philippines. With more than 6,000 watercolors and drawings, the Hispanic Society offers a comprehensive survey of Spanish painting and drawing into the early 20th century.

 

 – Sixth Annual Symposium with the Master Drawings Journal

Join us for an evening celebrating the origins of Master Drawings and envisioning its future. Celebrate the most 2021 winner and finalists of the prestigious Ricciardi Prize for best article submitted to Master Drawings by a young scholar.

Sunday, January 23 at 12 pm: Lecture with Allen Memorial Art Museum curator, Alexandra Letvin on Highlights of the Drawing Collection at the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College hosted at Adam Williams Fine Art, 24 East 80th Street.

About Master Drawings New York

Master Drawings New York, the preeminent event for drawings on the calendar of art, began as a casual gallery walk during the Old Masters auctions and The Winter Show in New York. Since its co-founding in 2006 by Margot Gordon, an Old Masters specialist in New York City, and Crispian Riley-Smith of UK, the week has grown into a highly anticipated occasion.
