Redeemer 2024: widespread fires in the sign of Marco Polo, votive bridge and regattas
The Feast of the Redeemer (Festa del Redentore) is one of the most cherished holidays for Venetians, combining both religious and spectacular elements. On Saturday night, the fireworks attract thousands of visitors: light and reflection games on the unique stage of the Bacino di San Marco create a kaleidoscope of colors behind the spires, domes, and bell towers of the city.
It is an occasion to remember the end of the terrible plague epidemic that struck Venice between 1575 and 1577. The Redeemer, the “most famous” night as Venetians colloquially call it, is an integral part of the customs of the lagoon city’s inhabitants. They continue to renew, even today, the gastronomic traditions, folklore, and celebrations handed down by their ancestors, making this “very Venetian” festival internationally known and one of the city’s greatest tourist attractions.
The event is part of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death.
